A development of style is always a journey.

From colors to story: The winning formula for style development in animation

The path of style development in animated explanatory films is much more than a mere design decision. People often choose between “laying technique”, “flat” or “outline”, and the logo appears at the end of the clip — but is that really enough for a well-thought-out marketing strategy?

In this post, we take you on a fascinating journey that goes beyond budget limits and focuses on the brand, message and viewer.

Finding the right concept

A successful and value-adding animated explanatory film requires not only a compelling story, but also an appealing design. The development of styles plays a key role in this, not only supporting the story, but also subtly conveying the identity of a brand without relying on words in the narration.

Abstracted discovery process — focus on the story

The development of styles must be closely linked to the story. Can the chosen style convey all the information and emotions of the story? With explanatory films in particular, it is important to abstract processes in such a way that the essentials stand out without overwhelming the audience. The design process should use visual metaphors that are immediately understandable and guide the viewer's focus.

The following pictures illustrate the journey of a woman who has to visit many counseling centers and retell her story again and again in order to find the right help for herself. The steps consist of appointment notes, notes and forms, which further underline the time-consuming and bureaucratic process.

Draw an overall picture — Integrate corporate identity

The corporate identity (CI) of a company comprises more than just the corporate design. It reflects the values, standards and communication of a brand. This should be considered in the design process to ensure a holistic presentation in the video.

The following pictures show the marked design colors of one of our customers. In order to have more freedom in color design, we have added various gradations to the primary colors. Since the target group should cover many people in their differences, the second picture covers many different types.

Stick to rules

In the world of animated films, the possibilities are almost limitless. Nevertheless, clear limits must be set that take into account both design and film rules. Shapes, colors, typography and cinematic elements such as cutting sequences should be considered.

Form follows function — meaning of every design element

Each design element must have a goal and be carefully selected. Design is communication and thoughtful use prevents distraction or misleading information.

In the background, the image only works with suggested objects that give us a feeling of a living environment, but do not focus on them. We get the most important information from the foreground: A woman sits at the table, holds the note of her medical diagnosis in her hand in order to download a prescription app.

Summary: Individual style development with a strategic view

Individually designed animations don't necessarily mean tailored or targeted. Sustainable style development requires the search for the right questions. Brand, message and target group must be carefully considered in order to create optimal conditions for animated explanatory films.
